NY AG THREATENS SUIT OVER FRACKING

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced today that he plans to sue the federal government if it doesn't commit within 30 days to conducting a full-scale review of regulations that would allow fracking in the Delaware River Basin.

"New Yorkers are correctly concerned about fracking's potential dangers to their environment, health and communities
and I will use the full authority of my office, including aggressive legal action, to ensure the federal government is forced to address those concerns."

"The state Department of Environmental Protection has sent a letter to every gas-producing company in Pennsylvania, explaining what went wrong at a recent Marcellus Shale gas drilling rig explosion and asking the industry to use best practices when it comes to safety".

"Team 4 investigative reporter Jim Parsons obtained a copy of the letter, which said that the fire in Avella, Washington County, caused a 'significant threat to public health, safety and the environment ...' and that it was caused by 'improperly managed condensate that produced vapors that ignited.'"

"There's no mention in the letter of requirements that must be followed. Instead, the DEP said it is 'requesting' that companies 'voluntarily adhere' to best practices, and it concludes the letter by 'strongly encouraging' producers to develop plans to safely control hydrocarbon vapors."
