After midnight last night the New York Senate suspended "hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of natural gas or oil until May 15, 2011" and "suspends the issuance of new permits for such drilling." The bill was then delivered to assembly.
The vote was 48 to 9.
15 Republicans voted yes
"The State Assembly is expected to take up the bill in September."
"This should send a powerful message to the governor that New Yorkers want the state to take a slow measured approach to new gas production - unlike that undertaken in neighboring Pennsylvania, where the Marcellus Shale boom has resulted in dirty - and in some cases tragic - consequences."
